The Old Guy Starts Down the Road - Mon. Sept 10, 2018

Hello, I am Mike, the eponymous Old Guy. In the next 5 years, I will transition from active work to retirement.  I have had a great life so far. Of course, there have been some rough and even rougher times.  In 1981, both of my parents died of lung cancer, 6 months apart. I have never smoked - not a single cigarette (of any type, if you know what I mean) - and cringe a bit when I see young people lighting up. C'est la vie, to each our own.

Why this website? I have gathered a lot of experiences and am an extrovert (ESTJ), by Myers-Briggs measurements). My friends and colleagues know that I have an opinion on everything, and am perfectly willing to let you know what it is. I like to joke continually, to the point of people not always knowing when I am joking. Fortunately for me, I am easy to amuse and amusing myself has been a life-long passion. I voraciously devour information and I like to be the go-to guy for questions and help. I know many people my age and older who are intimidated by the tech that has taken over their lives. I spend a good deal of my time with people in middle age who are so busy with children, parents, and life in general that they don't have the time to look for the special things that can help define a good life. That is why I am doing this. I like to help.

I am a cliche freak.  The secret lies in knowing which cliches to take to heart. In my scientific field - food safety - we have some good catch phrases. For example, "everything in moderation, including moderation", or "cook your food and wash your hands". I can assure you that following these saws will take care of 95% of your food health issues. You will be happier and a little less sick, too. In coming posts, I will undoubtedly smear these pages with bland pap.  Perhaps I will need a marker to make it clear when something really matters. Your feedback will help.

I do not profess to be good at this.  This is my first post and I hope that practice will make them better and more entertaining and informative. I hope to start a parallel vlog, but that requires more skills (and equipment) than those I currently have. I would like to see this site blossom and become a comfortable source of useful information and smiles (my first movie reference - with a nod to Fenwick, I'm doing it for the smile)
